“The brave citizens of Toronto are peaceful and well-mannered Occupiers, and we will not let the City, or the mayor that uses vulgar language in public, get involved. You have said that by next week the Occupiers shall be removed, and we say by next week if you do not change your mind, you shall be removed from the internet.”
So says a video uploaded to YouTube yesterday by Anonymous Operation, the always-changing community of hacktivists perhaps best known for derailing the sites of companies including PayPal and MasterCard, as payback for blocking financial donations to Wikileaks.
Anonymous is, depending on who you ask, anything from a group of cunning cyber-terrorists to a bunch of nerds wearing Guy Fawkes masks trolling for lolz so they can brag about it on 4chan. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
The group (or bunch of subgroups, or… well, nobody’s really sure exactly what Anonymous is or how to define it, because they’re anonymous, except that they’re probably something) first rose to prominence in 2008 when it protested Scientology in cities around the world, including Toronto. Since then the group has further made a name for itself by conducting denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and other hacks on people or organizations deemed “enemies,” as well as assisting in the coordination of public protests worldwide. Anonymous has been particularly involved with the Arab Spring revolutions, conducting attacks on both Egyptian and Tunisian governments during those countries’ revolutions, as well as hacking the Syrian Defense Ministry’s website during the Syrian uprising.
Notorious hacktivist group Anonymous claimed Monday that it crashed several child porn sites earlier this month and shamed those who patronized them.
According to pcmag.com, the group “used a brute force attack to infiltrate a server called Freedom Hosting, which housed about 40 child porn sites. The biggest site was Lolita City, which contained more than 100GB of content.
Before taking down the sites, Anonymous, which had previously targeted government organizations and corporations, said it issued a warning to the server to remove its content.
“When it failed to do so, Anonymous attacked,” pcmag.com says. “The sites were down for about five minutes before an admin restored them, upon which Anonymous again launched a successful attack.”
Later, the group posted on Pastebin the names of 1,589 individuals who visited Lolita City.
Anonymous, the loose-knit web “hacktavist” group that has been associated with taking down MasterCard.com and attacking the Church of Scientology, is apparently planning on launching a coordinated attack on the Fox News website because of the way the network has covered the Occupy Wall Street movement, according to a video posted on YouTube.
“Anonymous intends on destroying the Fox News website because their continued right wing conservative propaganda can no longer be tolerated,” a computer-generated voice says in the video. “They use words such as “filthy,” “disgusting” and “dirty” to describe the protesters. Since they will not stop belittling the occupiers, we will simply shut them down.”
The video specifically calls out Fox News host Sean Hannity. According to Media Matters, Sean Hannity on October 3 said the protestors’ rhetoric and behavior “destructive.”
The voice in the video says that the attack will be carried out on November 5.
CNET explains the significance of the date:
The date–November 5–is commonly referred to as Guy Fawkes day in honor of the Brit who tried to blow up parliament in the Gunpowder Plot of 1604. Fawkes was immortalized in “V For Vendetta,” a 2006 movie about a freedom fighter who uses terrorist tactics against a totalitarian society. A mask from the movie has become a symbol for Anonymous.
As the Occupy movement fizzles out in many major cities across the globe, there appears to be no end in site for Occupy Toronto with protesters blocking lunch hour traffic in the city’s financial district Thursday and a new video warning sympathizers plan to hack Toronto Stock Exchange computer systems.
In a YouTube clip called “Operation #TMX Has Been Compromised,” a computerized voice claiming to represent hacktivist collective Anonymous says the group can “no longer stay silent.”
“With the Canadian citizens protesting, we have been doing our work,” the voice says. The Anonymous logo – a silhouette of headless businessman – accompanies the audio. QMI Agency could not confirm whether Anonymous is in fact planning an attack.
#OccupyOakland has come under attack from city police, who now appear to be calling in reinforcements from Palo Alto. A protester who did two tours in Iraq is in critical condition with fractured skull and brain injury after a cop shot him in the head with a “non-lethal” weapon. A crowd of protesters were deliberately hit with a flashbang while rendering first aid to an injured protester. Police claimed in a recent press release that “no injuries” have been reported so far.
These are among the most disturbing and criminal acts to be have been proven on the part of U.S. police since NYPD officers were outed as having routinely planted drugs on suspects earlier this month. The time has come to retaliate against Oakland police via all non-violent means, beginning with doxing of individual officers and particularly higher-ups involved in the department’s conduct of late.
Those willing to assist in doxing should send any found materials to email@example.com. To work with Anonymous, use an IRC client to join irc.anonops.li #anonops.
I’m offering a $1,000 reward, no questions asked, for the name of the officer who threw a flashbang at the injured Iraqi vet.

A subgroup of internet “hacktivist” clan Anonymous, known as “CabinCr3w”, has released personal contact information for Brian Moynihan, the chief executive of the Bank of America.
The information was posted to the group’s Tumblr blog, and includes his personal phone number.
Moynihan is the latest victim of CabinCr3ws attacks, which saw the personal information of CitiGroup CEO, Vikram Pundit, also leaked online.
In that case, the information included his wife’s name, the value of his home and his personal cell-phone number.
Other targets included James O’Keefe of Project Veritas and Lloyd Blankfien, chairman of Goldman Sachs.
The attacks are in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement which has seen protestors around the world gather in various financial districts in protest of social and economic inequality.
The “hacktivist” group Anonymous has uncovered what it says was a massive child pornography ring, according to the Examiner.
The hackers targeted several websites, including “Lolita City,” which the Guardian says included 1,589 users.
The attack was part of Anonymous’ “Operation Darknet.” The Guardian explains that “Darknet websites are part of the Invisible Web, sometimes called the Deep Web, containing content that is not part of the Surface Web, which is indexed by standard search engines.”
Anonymous published the usernames of those who frequent Lolita City, which, the Guardian reports, had 100 gigabytes of child porn.
“We have been targeting them in secret for a while now, taking down their servers as much as possible,” one hacker named Arson told Gawker in a chat. “We decided to seek media attention for this operation so that we may get the resources needed to shut them down on a more permanent basis.”
Some of the username’s are explicit, while others are just creepy and ominous. Take the monickers “redhotchily”, “PantyhosePedo” and “PureEvil” as examples.
Unlike its reported attempts to “erase” the New York Stock Exchange, or its alleged involvement in the Playstation hack, the uncovering of an alleged child porn ring is unlikely to bring Anonymous much scorn.
